MATTER CHANGES:

Matter can change in two ways... There are two types of changes in matter: Physical changes and Chemical changes. This next video gives an explanation of their characteristics:






Chemical changes are also called CHEMICAL REACTIONS. On chemical reactions we have two components:

REACTANTS: Are the substances involved in the reaction.
PRODUCTS: Is the result of the reaction.

In this video you can see an example of REACTANTS and PRODUCTS, with food:



 Well, chemical changes are also called chemical reactions. Some examples of chemical reactions are: OXIDATION, COMBUSTION and FERMENTATION.

One question for you: Imagine that you have a bowl of cereal and milk... But you want to eat them separately... What method would you use? You would have to use a method called: FILTRATION... When you use this method you separate the solids from the liquids... But... Can we separate liquids? Yes, we can... We have to use other different methods.

Before we learn new things let's remember what we have been learning on this unit so far:

- We have been learning about: GENERAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS: MASS and VOLUME.

 - And we have also been learning about: SPECIFIC PROPERTIES OF MATTER: HARDNESS, BRITTLENESS, ELASTICITY and DENSITY.

Now, let's get back to your infant days 😉 to talk about materials... Do you remember the story of 'The three little pigs'? ... I'm sure you do 😊... I have a question for you... If we think about materials... What was the problem that the two first pigs had with their houses...?

Well yes! The problem was that they were not using the right materials to build them... That's why the wolf could destroy them... But their brother was building the right house using the right materials...

That happens with everything that we want to create... Houses, machines, structures... We need to know the PROPERTIES of the materials that we are using... So the final result is the right one, and we can use them to live, to protect ourselves, to cook...

That is what we will learn today on our lesson.

One of the properties we are going to learn about is Thermal Conductivity, that is the capacity of one object to conduct heat. This next video shows you what thermal conductivity is through one experiment:



Now watch this other video about materials that can absorb water...


... The opposite idea to absorbing water it's IMPERMEABILITY... Remember this word.

So... We have been talking about HEAT CONDUCTION and IMPERMEABILITY (which is opposite to absorption)... The third idea that we have to learn is TRANSPARENCY.

...

Now... Can you think about some examples where these properties are important?... Well let me give you one... ARQUITECTURE... Yes! Creating houses and buildings... If we are in a place without light, we need to use transparent materials... If we are in a cold place we need to use materials that don't let heat get out of our house...

Now... We have been learning about properties of matter... Now that we know about that... I have a question: If we want to use and transform matter... How can we do that? How can we make it happen??


... Well, to make it happen we have to use forces... Sometimes forces are produced by humans or animals... And sometimes they are produced by nature... Forces transform things... Forces are everywhere... Like on this picture... Here we can see an archer transforming the BOW and THE STRING 🏹 ... using the force of his arms:

And this video shows you how forces can change the motion and the shape of objects:




So... We have learned that:

- If we want to transform matter we need to use forces.
- Forces can change things around us.
- Forces have different effects on things.

Imagine you have to do a list of materials that you need to create a tent to go camping ⛺️... 
And now... Imagine you need to do a list of materials that you need to build a house 🏠.

... Would you use the same materials? 

... NO... Why? They will have different characteristics because a tent a house have different uses... A tent has to be light... So you can transport it. A house has to be strong, because it stays a the same place for years and years. The materials that we use to create a tent are soft and flexible... And the materials that we use to build a house are strong and hard, they have different properties.
